Solskjaer hints that De Gea could be dislodged next season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that Dean Henderson could push David de Gea for his undisputed No.1 role at Manchester United next season.

The United boss has no doubt that 23-year-old Henderson will become the club’s and England’s first-choice goalkeeper at some stage after some superb displays on loan at Sheffield United.

The Whitehaven-born keeper has kept an impressive 10 clean sheets for the high-flying Blades this season, and was expected to be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the friendlies against Italy and Denmark before those games were postponed.

Henderson is currently spending a second season on loan at Bramall Lane and the two clubs are believed to have agreed a deal in principle to keep the player in South Yorkshire until the end of the season next month.

United have been tracking Henderson’s progress and despite the player yet making a senior appearance for his parent club, he is rated very highly.

“Dean has made some great choices over the years and has developed fantastically,” said Solskjaer. “We’re looking at that in terms of where he’s going to be next season, but as yet that has not been decided.

“This season has proved a great experience for him, he’s done himself some favours with his performances, and proved he will be England’s No.1 and Man United’s No.1 at some point.”

The big hurdle in the way of Henderson at Old Trafford is Spanish keeper David de Gea, who has been United’s first-choice keeper since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

De Gea signed a new four-year deal last September, but his form has been patchy this season and Solskjaer has hinted he is not concerned by upsetting either one of them with a battle for the top job.

“It’s not my job to keep the players happy or in the team or out of it. Part of it is their responsibility of performing and doing well,” added Solskjaer.
