Sachia Vickery hits out at Novak Djokovic over ‘selfish’ US Open comments

American world No. 158 Sachia Vickery wasn’t a fan of Novak Djokovic’s comments on the US Open as she says the Serb should play a 60k event in Alabama and then speak how hard the conditions are. The US Open organizers are hopeful of staging the event as scheduled but players would be put under strict hygiene restrictions while at Flushing Meadows.

Some of the players have spoken against the strict hygiene restrictions — most notably world No. 1 Djokovic, who said: “The rules that they told us that we would have to respect to be there, to play at all, they are extreme.

“We would not have access to Manhattan, we would have to sleep in hotels at the airport, to be tested twice or three times per week. “Also, we could bring one person to the club which is really impossible. I mean, you need your coach, then a fitness trainer, then a physiotherapist.

All their suggestions are really rigorous but I can understand that due to financial reasons, due to already existing contracts, organisers (want the event to be) held.”

Sachia Vickery claims Djokovic was a bit selfish in his comments on the US Open

“He should go and play a 60k (lower-level tournament) in Troy, Alabama and then come back and let us know how hard the conditions are,” Vickery told Sky Sports.

“It’s a little selfish to say that in a way because there are so many players who cannot afford to have seven or eight people travel with them in their team. Most of us are used to travelling with just one or two people.

“Obviously he’s earned the right to have as many people as he wants but at the end of the day, it’s an entire tour. If they have to make a few restrictions in order to be able to play tennis again, I don’t think it’s a big deal.”

Vickery, a former world No. 73, hopes the US Open gets staged. “I think the US Open should go ahead even if it’s played without fans, which I really don’t mind because obviously when you come through playing Challenger events and lower-level tournaments you’re used to not having anybody there watching, pretty much,” she added.

Sachia Vickery has made four main draw appearances at the US Open throughout her career and picked up two first round and two second round exits at the tournament.
