Real Madrid Only played their once before
Mendy against Eibar.
With Real Madrid currently with only one available right back in Dani Carvajal, Zinedine Zidane tried out something new against Eibar, deploying Ferland Mendy on the opposite side of his preferred left flank.
Alvaro Odriozola is on loan at Bayern Munich, Achraf Hakimi is on loan at Borussia Dortmund and both Lucas Vazquez and Nacho, who can cover at right back, were both injured.
Therefore, Zidane knows that he has to take maximum care of Carvajal, which is why he took him off against Eibar at the break.
With such a tight schedule and Carvajal just two bookings away from a suspension, he doesn’t want to risk losing him.
His solution, however, was unconventional, as Mendy had only previously played five minutes at right back, during his time with Lyon against Villarreal.
Mendy looked somewhat uncomfortable. He is usually reserved in going forward down the left, and looked even more so down the right.
Thankfully for him and Madrid, most of Eibar’s attacks were down Marcelo’s left, leading the Frenchman to have a relatively quiet game.
