Andujar Oliver: Valencia's goal is rightly ruled out, Maxi Gomez is offside

Valencia thought they had taken the lead over Real Madrid after 20 minutes at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu as Rodrigo Moreno beat Thibaut Courtois.

However, VAR alerted referee Jose Antonio Sanchez Martinez. who watched replays on the screen and felt that a marginally offside Maxi Gomez interfered with Raphael Varane as he looked to intercept Carlos Soler’s pass.

The Uruguayan didn’t touch the ball himself, but he did distract the Frenchman.

“Maxi blocks the Real Madrid player and that’s why the referee gives offside, it’s correctly ruled out,” Juan Andujar Oliver, MARCA’s resident referee expert, told Radio MARCA.

Valencia players were furious with the decision, with Jose Luis Gaya being given a yellow card for his protests.
