Real Madrid – La Liga: Marco Rose’s direct approach will put Zidane’s Real Madrid to the test

Real Madrid – La Liga Another lover of frenetic football

Marco Rose.Marco Rose.

Borussia Monchengladbach will be looking to pop Real Madrid’s bubble when the two teams face off in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Zinedine Zidane’s side coming off an impressive 3-1 win against Barcelona in the Clasico at the weekend.

That display from Real Madrid was completely different to the ones put in against Cadiz and Shakhtar Donetsk, but they will now come up against an opponent that is very different to Barcelona. The direct, frenetic play Marco Rose promotes at Gladbach will surely test the control of the likes of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema and Casemiro in the Real Madrid squad. Rose not only learnt this style under Jurgen Klopp at Mainz, but he also helped implement it in the Red Bull factory as coach of Salzburg, with this being the same methodology used by RB Leipzig, the team that beat Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid to reach the semi-finals of last season’s Champions League.

The 44-year-old coach first won the UEFA Youth League with Salzburg and, before leaving for Gladbach, he won two consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles, one Austrian Cup and made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League. Rose is part of the generation of German coaches who have achieved success in Europe. Besides Klopp, Thomas Tuchel’s style of football at Borussia Dortmund encouraged Paris Saint-Germain to take a chance on him, with the 47-year-old having led the club to their first-ever Champions League final last season. Then there is Hansi Flick, who took Bayern Munich to new heights – including beating PSG in the Champions League final – after taking over from Niko Kovac.

Current RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann completes this brilliant list of German coaches, with the 33-year-old having already been linked with one day taking charge at Real Madrid. None of these coaches had a career at the top, with some of their playing careers ending prematurely due to injury, but there’s no doubt that they are amongst the elite coaches in the world.
