Olympique Marseille v PSG Live Commentary & Result, 07/02/2021, Ligue 1

PSG keep this intriguing four-way title race going then while Marseille go away to lick their wounds having lost another Classique. The season still promises much for Pochettino’s men. For Marseille, the rebuild starts now. That’s all for now. Goodbye!

PSG stay third in Ligue 1 with this win but they cut the gap between them and leaders Lille back to three points. They’re still very much in the title mix, which also includes fourth-placed Monaco. Marseille remain ninth. They need to sort out their internal issues if they want to finish fifth, which now looks like the best they can hope for this season.

PSG leave the Stade Velodrome with all three points after a professional performance. Pochettino’s men gained a firm lead in the first half through Mbappe and Icardi and never looked in the mood to relinquish it, despite Marseille’s best efforts. Payet’s late dismissal compounded the hosts’ misery. PSG’s unbeaten run here in Marseille continues.

90′ + 4′ FULL-TIME: MARSEILLE 0-2 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

90′ + 4′ Marseille huff and puff a bit more in front of PSG’s penalty area but the visitors have got their goal locked down. The referee blows his whistle and that’s all!

90′ + 2′ There’ll be at least four minutes added onto the end of this game. We’ve had two already. Verratti’s sporting a welt on his side after that Payet tackle. It looks like a sore one.

Olympique Marseille

90′ RED CARD FOR PAYET! The Marseille man receives his marching orders for that tired challenge on Verratti. There wasn’t any malice in it but it was reckless so he has to go. Larguet pats his player on the back as he leaves the pitch.

90′ Verratti’s in need of treatment after taking a high foot in the chest from Payet. It looks like a nasty challenge. Let’s see what the referee does here…

Olympique Marseille

88′ Marseille also make a substitution. Cuisance is on for Rongier.

PSG

88′ The substitute Sarabia also goes off as Kean gets to come on for the last few minutes.

PSG

88′ Kehrer takes Florenzi’s place at right-back first for PSG.

86′ PSG are pretty much home and dry now. They’ve managed the game well since going 2-0 up. They’re going to make a few late changes.

84′ Chances at both ends! Sarabia cuts the ball back for Neymar in the box but Neymar fails to keep his effort down. Up the other end of the pitch, Henrique aims low for the near post. Rico is able to get a hand to it.

82′ Sakai fluffs a great chance to pull a goal back for Marseille! PSG don’t fully clear a ball in and Sakai is able to chest it down in the box. The full-back, now playing on the left for Marseille, can’t fully command it though and Rico gratefully claims it. Sakai yells in frustration.

80′ PSG see off another anaemic Marseille attack and Mbappe hangs up a cross from the left of the box. The PSG forward can’t quite keep it in play though.

Olympique Marseille

78′ Thauvin’s number also goes up. The winger hasn’t really been able to impact the game. Luis Henrique is on for him.

L. Perrin

Álvaro González

Olympique Marseille

78′ Gonzalez heads off down the tunnel. Perrin will take his place in defence for Marseille.

77′ Verratti is next to miss, albeit slightly closer to goal as Gonzalez can’t fully clear a cross. Meanwhile Gonzalez signals to be substituted. He clearly hasn’t shaken off the niggle he picked up earlier in that tussle with Neymar.

75′ Neymar has a pop from distance himself and fails to hit the target too. The Brazilian winces as he watches it go into the stands.

73′ Payet skies a shot as the ball comes to him on the edge of PSG’s box. Marseille probably need to score soon if they want to salvage anything from this game.

71′ Payet pulls off a nice cushioned header to Mandanda to kill a PSG cross with a player lurking behind him. Marseille have been better this half but still aren’t creating many good scoring chances.

69′ Gonzalez is back on his feet and Marseille will defend what will be a PSG corner. The hosts clear it.

67′ Neymar gets immediately involved in the game, taking a tumble in Marseille’s box as Gonzalez sticks a leg out. Caleta-Car quickly boots the ball out of play. It isn’t a penalty but Gonzalez looks to have injured himself having landed awkwardly.

Danilo Pereira

L. Paredes

PSG

66′ Next to leave the pitch is Paredes. It’s a wise decision as he’s running the risk of getting sent off. Pereira’s on for him.

PSG

65′ PSG make some substitutions. Neymar enters the fray, replacing Icardi. Icardi’s been wayward here but still has a goal to his name.

63′ Marseille take the free-kick too quickly and are forced to do it again. Thauvin’s penalised for leading with his elbow while challenging for a header.

62′ Kamara takes a tumble after a challenge from Paredes. Kamara seems to ask whether that’s worth a second yellow for the PSG man. The referee says no.

61′ Gueye has a header blocked in PSG’s box after Kamara’s flick on. Florenzi has tons of space down the right and fires a cross towards Icardi at the far post. Icardi can’t control it and it goes out for a throw on the opposite side.

60′ Kurzawa tracks Thauvin’s run to prevent the Marseille winger latching onto Payet’s pass into the box. It’s a Marseille corner which PSG clear. Verratti buys a free-kick shortly after.

58′ Kurzawa rolls the ball across goal for Icardi who goes down in the six-yard box. PSG believe he’s been pushed. The referee isn’t convinced.

Olympique Marseille

56′ Next off is Nagatomo. The Fiorentina loanee Lirola is on for him.

Olympique Marseille

56′ Marseille make a few substitutions. First the ineffectual Germain is replaced by Benedetto.

55′ Marseille have upped their game now. Payet teases Florenzi and gets a corner out of it. Payet fires in but Caleta-Car can’t keep his header down.

PSG

53′ Icardi gets a yellow card for that dangerous challenge on Mandanda. He had every right to go for that ball but did go in too full-blooded.

52′ There’s a nasty collision between Mandanda and Icardi as Icardi’s set through on goal! Icardi sticks out a foot to try to poke the ball past Mandanda but Mandanda bravely slides in and takes the hit to block the shot. Marseille get the free-kick.

51′ Marseille almost sneak a goal back! Thauvin lets rip from range and forces Rico into a smart save, winning a corner. From it Kamara goes down in the box but the referee isn’t interested. Germain’s header is blocked by Marquinhos. Rico is on hand to smother it before Germain can react.

Olympique Marseille

49′ Gueye’s booked for a very poor challenge in midfield. The referee let play on initially until Icardi headed way over the bar.

47′ Mbappe darts into the box from the left to cut back for Icardi who’s waiting near the six-yard box. Icardi can’t get his feet together though! Payet nips in and cannily goes down in the box to relieve the pressure on Marseille.

45′ The second half gets underway. No changes by either side at half-time.

Marseille have now conceded at least one goal in their last 13 Ligue 1 home matches, their worst run since September 2005. They’re also facing three consecutive defeats here at the Stade Velodrome for the first time since spring 2012. OM are in a real slump at the moment but they’ve honestly not been too bad here. Can Larguet gee his team up for the second half?

PSG lead 2-0 at the break after a ruthless first half from the champions. Mbappe’s impressive counter-attacking goal opened the scoring for PSG before Icardi grabbed the second goal with a deflection off his back. Marseille’s luck just hasn’t been in yet.

45′ + 3′ HALF-TIME: MARSEILLE 0-2 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

45′ + 3′ PSG’s free-kick comes to nought. That’ll be that for now!

PSG

45′ + 2′ Paredes is booked for getting up in the referee’s face after that Kamara foul. He’s done it a few times now.

45′ + 1′ Mbappe dashes inside to beat Sakai and keep PSG’s attack moving. Kamara eventually clatters into the PSG forward and gives the visitors a free-kick.

45′ There’ll be a minimum of two added minutes at the end of this first half.

44′ Thauvin finds Sakai’s underlapping run and Kimpembe blocks the cross to give Marseille a corner. Again PSG defend it well, forcing the ball all the way back to Mandanda.

43′ Icardi drags a shot wide from Mbappe’s throughball. The offside flag is up anyway.

41′ Kamara’s pass goes astray and Mbappe curls a cross towards the box. It might even be a shot. Either way Mandanda claims it easily. Mbappe raises his hand to apologise to his teammates.

39′ Paredes gets a free-kick in the centre of the pitch as he’s tackled by Rongier. PSG are doing a great job of managing Marseille’s threat.

37′ Thauvin fires a low ball into the box that’s intercepted. Sakai looks to get on the end of a cross from the opposite side but Kurzawa and Rico have it covered.

35′ PSG win a free-kick to the left of the box as Gonzalez brings Mbappe’s counter-attacking run to a halt. Paredes swings it in and Icardi nods over. On second viewing the Argentine was offside anyway when Paredes struck the ball.

33′ Marseille have had 55 per cent possession of the ball so far, for all the good it’s done them. The hosts can’t help but make things difficult for themselves, can they?

31′ PSG almost make it 3-0! Marseille are unconvincing in playing out from the back and Paredes thumps a first-time effort towards goal that just kisses the right-hand post and goes out for a goal-kick.

29′ There’s a flare-up again as Thauvin is this time the victim of a Kurzawa foul. You never expect PSG and Marseille to be good-tempered when they face each other.

28′ Thauvin flashes a left-footed effort high and wide from just outside the box but the Marseille man is offside anyway. Marseille haven’t played that poorly so far. PSG have just been incredibly clinical.

26′ Tempers flare as Thauvin dives in late on Verratti. The referee wades in to calm things down and keeps his cards in his pocket on this occasion.

PSG

24′ Florenzi’s cross was decent but there’s no way Icardi meant that. Icardi pats his back as if to thank it. PSG now have a commanding early lead.

PSG

24′ GOAL! MARSEILLE 0-2 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN! Marseille are unlucky to be 2-0 down. Florenzi’s cross from the right doesn’t look dangerous with Icardi heading away from goal. It hits Icardi’s back and loops over Mandanda into the far corner.

23′ Gueye unleashes a rocket of a shot from just outside the box and Rico gets a glove to it to tip it out for a corner! It’s cleared but Marseille are starting to grow in influence after their slow start.

21′ A throw-in goes Marseille’s way and PSG aren’t happy. Marseille keep possession from it and find Sakai wide right. The cross is dummied and rolls to Rongier whose tame shot is straight at Rico. That’s a good chance for Marseille.

19′ Sakai’s cross from the right is blocked and Thauvin is unable to salvage it. Kamara angles the ball back out wide for Sakai but there’s too much pace on it for the Japanese right-back to reach it. It’s a PSG throw-in.

18′ Marseille are struggling to string more than a few passes together here with PSG pressing them high up the pitch. Pochettino’s influence on this PSG side is already visible.

17′ Marseille’s corner comes out to Kamara who lets fly on the volley from outside the box. It’s always rising and whistles way over.

16′ Sakai finds space down the right and rolls Thauvin into the box. Thauvin skips past Kimpembe but PSG’s centre-back recovers well to concede a corner.

14′ Mbappe appeals for a corner as he darts down the left-hand channel after a few flicks and tricks. The Frenchman’s left disapppointed as the decision goes the other way.

13′ Rongier has a crack at goal from outside the box but it’s blocked as he’s closed down quickly. PSG have started well.

Pablo Sarabia

Á. Di María

PSG

11′ PSG make an early change then. Di Maria walks off. Thankfully it looks precautionary more than anything else, but it’s a shame given his impact on this game given his short time on the pitch. Sarabia replaces him.

10′ Play stops as Di Maria takes a knock. It looks like Di Maria will be unable to continue as he explains his predicament to Pochettino.

PSG

9′ Di Maria weighted his pass out wide to Mbappe perfectly and Mbappe did the rest. PSG are in a good position already.

PSG

9′ GOAL! MARSEILLE 0-1 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN! That was a lightning counter-attack by PSG! What a start for the visitors! Mbappe shows his immense speed to latch onto Di Maria’s throughball, skip over a challenge and beat Mandanda at his near post.

8′ Payet’s corner is cleared by the first man. Suddenly PSG are away on the counter and…

7′ PSG put together some sloppy passing at the back and end up giving Marseille their first corner of the game. Payet waits to take it as the referee deals with some argy-bargy in the box.

5′ Di Maria swings the free-kick in left-footed. It comes in too quickly for Icardi who can’t keep his header down. The striker holds his head in frustration.

4′ Kurzawa gets the better of Sakai near the corner flag and heads for the penalty area. Marseille’s right-back brings down Kurzawa to hand PSG the free-kick.

2′ Thauvin wins an early free-kick down the right for Marseille as he’s brought down by Kimpembe.

1′ The 100th ever competitive meeting between Marseille and PSG gets underway!

The two sides are out on the pitch at the Stade Velodrome. The two captains Mandanda and Marquinhos exchange pleasantries and we’re almost ready for kick-off.

Marseille are in for a test here. OM are winless in their last five Ligue 1 games and haven’t won any of their last seven home matches against PSG in Ligue 1. However, they did beat the champions 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Parc des Princes last September. Will PSG roll on as usual or can Marseille do the double over PSG for the first time since 2009/10?

Larguet makes four changes to the Marseille side that drew 2-2 away to Lens a few days ago. Nagatomo, Gueye and Rongier come in. There are five changes to the PSG side that beat Nimes 3-0 midweek. Neymar starts this game on the bench.

SUBS: Danilo Pereira, Pablo Sarabia, Julian Draxler, Moise Kean, Neymar, Alexandre Letellier, Mitchel Bakker, Thilo Kehrer, Rafinha.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN (4-3-3): Sergio Rico; Alessandro Florenzi, Marquinhos (c), Presnel Kimpembe, Layvin Kurzawa; Idrissa Gueye, Leandro Paredes, Marco Verratti; Angel Di Maria, Mauro Icardi, Kylian Mbappe.

SUBS: Luis Henrique, Cheick Souare, Leonardo Balerdi, Pol Lirola, Michael Cuisance,  Dario Benedetto, Saif-Eddine Khaoui, Lucas Perrin, Yohann Pele.

MARSEILLE (4-3-3): Steve Mandanda (c); Hiroki Sakai, Alvaro Gonzalez, Duje Caleta-Car, Yuto Nagatomo; Valentin Rongier, Boubacar Kamara, Pape Alassane Gueye; Florian Thauvin, Valere Germain, Dimitri Payet.

While Marseille’s season is starting to look like a write-off, champions PSG still have high hopes of defending their Ligue 1 title. PSG are currently third behind Lille and Lyon and really need a win to keep breathing down the frontrunners’ necks. After PSG defeated Marseille 2-1 in the Trophee des Champions a few weeks ago, Mauricio Pochettino will be confident his side can repeat the trick here.

It’s hard to imagine that Marseille could enter Le Classique in greater disarray. Just days after Andre Villas-Boas’s messy departure from the club, Nasser Larguet takes interim charge of ninth-placed OM for their 100th ever competitive meeting with PSG.
