Kaizer Chiefs’ Manyama will have to sit on the grandstands and give youngsters a chance – Vilakazi

Amakhosi could not beat Stellenbosch but are now four games unbeaten, although questions have been raised about their team selection

Orlando Pirates legend Benedict Vilakazi has accused Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt of not handing his players equal playing chances and questioned Lebogang Manyama’s continued selection in the team.

Chiefs were held 0-0 by Stellenbosch away on Saturday, but Vilakazi was left asking questions about how attacker Manyama made his way into the starting line-up, saying the player does not have the temperament for a challenging match.

Despite the Chiefs attacker grabbing a goal and an assist in the previous match against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila after coming on as a substitute, Vilakazi is still far from being convinced that the Bafana Bafana star deserves a run.

“Against TTM I think he had that mentality where he says ‘I am a big name-player and also the team is having problems so obvious I have an advantage. Whatever I do, I will have an advantage because there are problems in the team.’ Psychologically, TTM players were not there 100 percent,” Vilakazi told iDiski TV.

“But look today, they played against a team whose players are ready, players that are focused. So that is why it was so difficult for him to shine. So it tells you about his quality that if he is not pulling his socks up he will have to sit on the grandstands and give the youngsters a chance.”

With Manyama seemingly deep in Hunt’s plans and with the coach frequently changing his squad, Vilakazi feels that there are no equal playing opportunities at Amakhosi.

“I am also surprised why people like Manyama keep on getting playing chances whereas [Dumisani Zuma] plays two just games and then he is left out of the team,” added Vilakazi.

“[Siphelele] Ntshangase played in the Caf Champions League qualifiers for the group stage but now we do not see him. So let’s be open for everyone. If some players have been given a chance even if they don’t perform, why not also give a chance to others?”

After earning a point on the road, Chiefs are back at FNB Stadium where they will host struggling Baroka FC on Tuesday.
