Huge technology gaffe as Sheff Utd denied win in first game back

Date published: Wednesday 17th June 2020 7:56

The Premier League returned with a moment of controversy as goalline technology failed to award Sheffield United what would have been a winning goal against Aston Villa.

The two promoted sides met for the first Premier League game since March, but even though the game ended as a goalless draw, there was a huge talking point.

Sheffield United will feel aggrieved at the result, as they appeared to score in the first half. The ball looked like it had clearly been carried over the line by Villa keeper Orjan Nyland after an inswinging set piece, but referee Michael Oliver indicated that he had not been alerted to the fact by goalline technology.

It was the major talking point, as both sides failed to score thereafter.

The Blades missed the chance to rise into the European places as a result – while Villa remain in the relegation zone.
