Granada v Barcelona Live Commentary & Result, 03/02/2021, Copa del Rey

103′ Alba’s booked for his reaction to the penalty being given. Granada have the chance to equalise from the spot…

103′ Penalty Goal Federico Vico Villegas

102′ PENALTY FOR GRANADA! What is going on?! Dest clumsily barges over Neva as Granada’s left-back rampages into the penalty area. Barca protest but it’s a penalty all day long.

100′ Alba’s cross for that goal was fantastic. Granada surely have to be down and out now? It’s hard to see the hosts as having thrown the win away but they have kind of thrown it away.

100′ GOAL! GRANADA 2-3 BARCELONA! Barca grab the lead for the first time in this tie! They’ve come back from two goals down! Griezmann powers a header into the net from Alba’s cross. There was nothing Escandell could do about it.

98′ Montoro snatches possession in front of his own box in a similar way to how he did for Soldado’s goal. He goes for the same direct pass too as Suarez sets off on the run. Unlike Soldado though, Suarez’s path to goal is blocked by several Barca defenders.

7′ Barca win a corner down their right off Sanchez. Escandell parries again when the ball comes near him. He really has been magnificent in goal for Granada.

5′ Barca get back to testing Escandell. The keeper drops low to push aside Messi’s effort at the left-hand post. Escandell smothers the follow-up shot too.

3′ Barca have had 28 shots so they deserve to be drawing this at least. They haven’t half made it difficult for themselves with their defending though. That might give Granada some comfort that they can create more chances.

1′ We’re back underway for the first half of extra time. We’ll have to see whether Granada can pick themselves up to go for another half hour.

Barcelona have forced this Copa del Rey quarter-final to extra time with two late goals after being 2-0 down. Granada did so well to defend their lead as long as they did but Griezmann’s lucky goal gave Barca hope. Alba’s 92nd minute finish means we’ll have another 30 minutes of this.

90′ + 4′ Granada almost snatch victory again at the death! Barca send too many men forward again and Suarez gets loose down the right. The substitute reaches the box but drags his shot just wide of the left-hand post! This has been great fun.

90′ + 3′ Montoro gets a yellow card for a poor challenge on de Jong as Barca search for a winner.

90′ + 2′ Griezmann was unselfish in heading the ball down and Barca have got their reward. Can they go on to win this now?

90′ + 2′ GOAL! GRANADA 2-2 BARCELONA! Barca come back from 2-0 down! Alba finishes from close range as Griezmann nods the ball down to the left-back. Granada understandably look crestfallen.

90′ There is still time for Barca. Four more minutes of time in fact. Meanwhile, Braithwaite heads over from Dembele’s cross.

88′ Messi gets the assist for what might go down as a Griezmann goal. Is there still time for Barca?

88′ GOAL! GRANADA 2-1 BARCELONA! They couldn’t, could they? It’s a cruel goal for Escandell to concede after the game he’s had, as Griezmann’s speculative near post shot hits the post and rebounds off the keeper into his own net.

87′ Barca hit the crossbar for the second time! Dembele can’t shake off Neva and has a shot blocked. The Frenchman decides to cut inside onto his left and unleashes a great effort towards goal that smashes off the bar and away.

85′ Griezmann stretches to get a shot away from the left of the box but can only fire wide from a difficult angle from Dembele’s pass.

84′ Barca are not getting past Escandell today. Messi skids a shot at the Granada keeper from distance but the man between the sticks has it covered.

82′ Escandell keeps Barca at bay again! Griezmann goes for a spectacular overhead kick as Granada half-clear a cross and Escandell reacts quickly to tip it over the bar. It’s a Barca corner, of course, and Escandell races off his line to block Araujo’s shot. He’s had a great game.

80′ Granada substitution. Vallejo is on for Puertas.

78′ Dembele twists this way and that to win Barca a corner down their right. It’s taken quickly and Dembele’s cross is booted away.

Germán Sánchez

Yellow Card

77′ Sanchez is booked for a foul off the ball.

76′ Barcelona make a substitution. Puig is on for Busqets. Koeman might as well give the 21-year-old a runout at this point.

75′ The corner comes out to Messi at the far post. Barca’s captain sends it back across goal and it ends in yet another Barca corner. Unfortunately for Barca none of their corners have been particularly effective yet. Neither’s this one as Busquets heads over.

74′ Granada’s wall does its job, blocking Messi’s shot. Barca get their 12th corner of the game.

73′ Barca get a free-kick just outside the D as Vico tugs down Messi. Messi’s primed as ever to take this.

71′ It’s a Barca corner. Dembele sends it in and Sanchez wins the header. Granada spring forward on the counter but Neva’s sent too far wide to be a threat.

69′ Barca are huffing and puffing but aren’t looking like finding the net any time soon. Granada have got this game locked down at the moment.

67′ Granada are looking bolder now. Suarez’ run down the right is halted by Alba. Machis picks up the ball and heads for the box but can’t get a shot away.

66′ Granada make their fourth change of the game. Suarez is on for Soldado who’s done his job well.

64′ Umtiti, who’s been at fault for both of Granada’s goals, also goes off. Braithwaite is on.

63′ Koeman decides to make a change. Dembele is on for Trincao who won’t be scoring today but perhaps should have done.

63′ Trincao hits the crossbar! The winger picks up possession in the box and smashes an effort towards goal. It rebounds off the woodwork and back into play. Escandell was beaten.

61′ Escandell keeps Granada’s clean sheet intact for now! Messi spots an opportunity from the edge of the box and takes it, forcing Escandell to dive to his right. Granada’s keeper gets a good hand to it. The hosts clear the resulting corner.

59′ Dest plays a one-two with Trincao to reach the byline. The American’s high cross is easily caught by Escandell though.

58′ Granada are making some curiously early changes. Soro is the next player to head off. The left-sided Vico is on for him.

57′ Roberto trudges off for treatment. Hopefully his injury isn’t too bad. Dest takes his place as Barca’s right-back.

56′ Barca’s problems are getting worse. It looks like Roberto will be unable to continue. He’s been in discomfort since clearing a Granada cross a few moments ago.

55′ Machis, newly on in this second half, races down the right and skins Messi – of all players – before cutting inside to fire a routine shot at ter Stegen.

54′ Barca take the corner short and Alba’s cross from deep is headed away. Barca will have to try harder than that to break Granada down now.

53′ Alba knocks a cross off Machis for yet another Barca corner. There’s some argy-bargy before it’s taken.

51′ Barca resume their dominance, winning a corner off Neva. Granada see it out.

49′ Granada have scored with their two shots on target. Barca have had plenty of chances but none as good as the ones they’ve given Granada.

47′ Montoro wasted no time in getting the ball forward there. Barca are getting caught out in transition way too easily. Koeman’s team have serious work to do now.

47′ GOAL! GRANADA 2-0 BARCELONA! Barca are in real trouble. Montoro cuts out an attack on the edge of his own box and launches it forward to Soldado with Barca’s defence caught upfield. Soldado takes it into the area and slots it calmly past ter Stegen!

D. Foulquier

Víctor Díaz

46′ Diaz is the other Granada player to make way. Foulquier replaces him at right-back.

46′ Granada make two half-time substitutions. That’s surprising. Kenedy is replaced by Machis.

Barca had 13 shots in that first half, six of which were on target, but Escandell has been equal to everything the visitors can throw at him so far. There’s only so long that Granada can go giving up this many chances without conceding though. Will Martinez ask his team to carry on as they have been or look to tighten up?

Granada have a surprise lead at half-time despite being under pressure for most of the first half. Barca were well on top until some unnecessary faffing in defence helped present Kenedy with an easy goal. Koeman will no doubt be telling his players what’s what during the break.

45′ Granada end the half on a high as Soldado lays off to Puertas. Puertas looks to find Eteki to his right but it’s cut out. That’s all for now!

44′ Barca are looking vulnerable to counter-attacks with their defence playing high up in possession. Escandell throws a quick ball to Puertas who is caught offside.

42′ Roberto shoots from distance from Alba’s crossfield pass but there’s not enough power on it to worry Escandell who claims it with ease.

41′ It’s another Barca corner as Messi’s cross is headed out by Diaz. Again Granada hold firm. If the hosts can reach half-time without conceding this will have been a great half for them.

40′ Trincao reaches the byline from Messi’s pass and crosses low for Griezmann. It goes out for Barca’s sixth corner of the game. Escandell confidently punches the delivery clear.

39′ Kenedy’s goal remains Granada’s only shot on target in this first half. Talk about efficiency.

37′ Barca look to recover quickly after a shaky last few minutes. Messi takes aim from outside the box but a defender is in the way.

35′ Barca need to be careful! Araujo is far too lax in receiving a pass and Kenedy darts in, robbing the Uruguayan. Kenedy eventually reaches the box and screeches a low shot wide of the far post.

33′ That was quick thinking by Soro after some hard work to win the ball off Umtiti. Barca will be very disapppointed to be behind after bossing this game since kick-off.

33′ GOAL! GRANADA 1-0 BARCELONA! That makes things interesting! Barca make a hash of passing out from the back and Soro pickpockets Umtiti near the byline. The midfielder rolls across goal to Kenedy who taps in!

31′ Granada will be glad to have made it through the first half hour of this game unscathed but they’ve still created very little. Kenedy chests a high ball down and takes it inside but the Chelsea loanee is offside.

29′ Eteki’s rightly booked for barging Messi off the ball during a Barca counter-attack. He knew what he was doing.

27′ Messi cuts in from the right and dinks a cross towards the far post that Soro heads out for another Barca corner. Pedri works it short to Messi and Escandell saves Araujo’s tame header. The Uruguayan’s getting lots of chances from set-pieces though.

25′ Messi’s booked for catching Diaz with a high foot. That was scarcely worse than the challenge he suffered a few moments ago but those are the rules.

23′ Messi aims for the top right corner but Escandell tracks the shot well and dives the right way to keep it out! Granada survive Barca’s quick corner as Araujo’s header is blocked. This game surely won’t stay goalless for long at this rate.

22′ Montoro catches Messi with a late challenge just outside the box. It’s not pretty but there won’t be a card. Messi gets up quickly to take the resulting free-kick.

20′ Chance for Granada! The hosts’ target man Soldado does well to take down a direct pass and hold it up to the left of Barca’s penalty area. Soldado spots Puertas darting in from deep and crosses but Puertas heads wide! That was a decent opportunity.

18′ Barca pass around the edge of Granada’s box but the attack comes to nothing. Granada are starting to settle after that nervy start.

16′ Umtiti is fouled in his own half as he tries to pass out from the back. Barca clearly want to get on the scoresheet as quickly as possible.

14′ Griezmann wins a free-kick down the left wing as he’s brought down by Eteki. Granada can barely get out of their half so far.

12′ Messi slips Griezmann into the box and the Frenchman’s shot deflects off Sanchez for a Barca corner. Granada clear it without any incident.

10′ Barca have had 72 per cent of the ball already. They look in no mood to mess around as they did against Athletic in the Super Cup.

8′ Messi’s corner comes in and Araujo heads over. This has been a great first few minutes or so for Barca. Ronald Koeman will be pleased.

7′ Granada are riding their luck already! Messi slaloms into the centre of the box and shoots straight at Escandell who spills it. It lands to Trincao who forces a fantastic fingertip save from Granada’s goalkeeper from close range! It’ll be a Barca corner.

5′ It’s been a lively start here with Barca getting all the opportunities. Trincao nods wide from Roberto’s cross.

4′ Barca get an early chance to take the lead! The visitors take the corner short to Trincao who whips a cross in from deep. Araujo gets ahead of everyone else and connects with an outstretched leg but Escandell is well-placed to save.

3′ Barca start the game brightly with Griezmann having a shot blocked from the right of the box after Trincao slides him through. The visitors get their first corner of the match.

The two sides are out on the pitch here in Granada. Granada are in their red, white and blue home kit. Barca are wearing their black away colours.

Last season Granada made it to the semi-finals of this competition where they were dumped out by Athletic. They’ll need to put in a quality performance to beat Barca who also went out at this stage to Athletic. Who will prevail? Let’s find out!

Granada boss Diego Martinez makes seven changes to the team that drew 0-0 with Celta Vigo. There are only three changes to Barca from their 2-1 win over Athletic in La Liga this past weekend as Roberto, Busquets and Trincao come in.

SUBS: Oscar Mingueza, Miralem Pjanic, Martin Braithwaite, Riqui Puig, Neto, Ousmane Dembele, Sergino Dest, Clement Lenglet, Arnau Tenas.

BARCELONA (4-3-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Sergi Roberto, Ronald Araujo, Samuel Umtiti, Jordi Alba; Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri; Trincao, Lionel Messi (c), Antoine Griezmann.

SUBS: Jesus Vallejo, Darwin Machis, Luis Suarez, Dimitri Foulquier, Rui Silva, Pepe Sanchez, Nehuen Perez, Fede Vico, Jorge Molina.

GRANADA (4-2-3-1): Aaron Escandell; Victor Diaz (c), Domingos Duarte, German Sanchez, Carlos Neva; Angel Montoro, Yan Eteki; Kenedy, Antonio Puertas, Alberto Soro; Roberto Soldado.

Since that result a few weeks ago Barca have gone from strength to strength, seeing off second-tier Rayo Vallecano to reach this stage. Granada’s form has been patchier but they still managed to pump third-tier Navalcarnero 6-0. Barca’s Super Cup defeat to Athletic Bilbao also shows they are still beatable.

When Granada and Barcelona met here just under a month ago in La Liga, Barca romped to a 4-0 victory with Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi both bagging braces. Now this pair meet again with a spot in the Copa del Rey semi-final at stake.
