Craig Martin: Reported Orlando Pirates target extends Cape Town City contract

The 27-year-old has been one of the Citizens’ most consistent players over the years

Craig Martin extended his Cape Town City contract by a further three years, ending speculation linking him with a move to Orlando Pirates in January.

Martin has reportedly been a Pirates transfer target since late 2020 but City are understood to have been reluctant to lose the player whom they slapped a R44 million price tag on.

Having scored two league goals and as many assists in 11 league appearances so far this season, the winger remains an important player at City.

Martin has made 88 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 10 goals.

It is yet to be seen if Pirates will resume their reported interest in the player during the next transfer window.

For now, the 27-year-old will continue his City midfield partnership with the likes of Bradley Ralani, Mpho Makola, Thabo Nodada, Fagrie Lakay and Charles Zulu.

Apart from Martin’s new deal, City’s other transfer business this January saw the arrival of forward Justin Shonga from Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

This paved way for the departure of Prince Opoku Agyemang whose loan spell was cut short after struggling to impress and he was sent back to his Ghanaian parent club Medeama SC.

City resume their PSL campaign with a trip to Polokwane for Sunday’s date with Baroka FC.

They sit fourth on the league table with six points better than their next opponents Baroka who are placed ninth.
