Messi has now scored the second-most penalties in LaLiga Santander historyEFE

Lionel Messi put Barcelona’s match at home to Leganes beyond doubt in the 68th minute when he converted his penalty to make the score 2-0 to the Catalans.

The Argentine was fouled as he made his way into the area, with Jonathan Silva’s contact finally taking him down.

That penalty is the 56th that Messi has scored in LaLiga Santander, which takes him level with legendary Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid striker Hugo Sanchez.

Messi is now just five behind the all-time leader in terms of penalties scored in the Spanish top flight: Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 32-year-old has missed a total of 12 spot-kicks in LaLiga Santander, while the Portuguese forward failed to score 11 before leaving for Juventus in 2018.

The goal against Leganes was Messi’s 21st in the league this season.
