Atletico Madrid Prolific off the bench for Atletico
When Marcos Llorente came on as a substitute at Anfield in March, he’d scored just one goal in 23 appearances for Atletico Madrid.
The midfielder had found it difficult to break into the side ahead of Thomas Partey, Saul and Koke and didn’t fit in on the right wing.
However, that night against Liverpool proved a turning point as he scored two goals and set up one more for Alvaro Morata as Atletico progressed.
Three months later at San Mames, Diego Simeone made the surprise selection of starting Llorente up front alongside Diego Costa.
He didn’t score or assist, but he put in a good performance in an unfamiliar position.
The goals returned to his game when he came off the bench against Osasuna on Wednesday night.
Llorente netted an impressive solo goal before assisting Alvaro Morata and Yannick Carrasco in an eventual 5-0 rout.
Since coming on at Anfield, the former Real Madrid man has scored three goals and made three assists in 160 minutes.
Simeone’s decision to play him further forward has proved to be a masterstroke.
