Athletic vs Atletico: Simon becomes Oblak at San Mames

Simon becomes Oblak at San Mames

If goals decide matches then goalkeepers do too, and Unai Simon played a key role in Athletic Club earning a point against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

It was a meeting of two of the best goalkeepers in LaLiga Santander, and both made important contributions.

Raul Garcia was on the end of a challenge from Renan Lodi early on, and he returned the favour by hitting him back a little harder the next time they crossed paths.

There is a forward player in Marcos Llorente. Diego Simeone played him in a more advanced role and he showed that he’s more than suited to it.

Oblak’s stop on Yeray was one the needed to be watched back. Whomever you support, it’s hard not to admire him.

The return from the hydration break brought goals. First up was Iker Muniain, and then Diego Costa followed up with his own shortly after.

Things changed on the hour when Simeone and Gaizka Garitano turned to their benches. Athletic made two changes then, while Atletico made three, something that wouldn’t happen in normal circumstances.

The break has allowed Oscar de Marcos to recover for the final stretch of the season after undergoing surgery in December. It was a fitting return, having last appeared against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on October 26.
